About the documentary

My name is Chloe Vidler, and I am creating this documentary about having a baby after experiencing baby loss for my final year university project.

One of the first things I decided when coming up with this idea, is that I wanted to hear real stories from real people. I thought this would make the documentary more authentic and raw. I know this is an extremely sensitive topic and so knew I had to be careful with my handling of it.

I have spoken to two women called Kareena and Suzanne, who have experienced baby loss and having a baby after loss. Their stories were both emotional, yet brave and inspiring.

Their stories lead the documentary so that listeners can try and understand what they have both been through, to raise awareness of the issue of baby loss, and learn how to help someone going through something similar.

Kareena and Suzanne had very different experiences throughout their losses, but several things remained the same, which I wanted to address. They both told me they felt the topic of baby loss was seen as taboo and unspoken about. They both stated that they often want to talk about it and yet no one seems to know how.

One of the main things they both spoke on, and the angle of this documentary is the experience of having another baby after baby loss and the impact that has on a person. Kareena and Suzanne both said that everyone treated it as a normal pregnancy when they knew it was far from normal after the trauma they had been through.

I then spoke to Jo and Mary who offered different perspectives to the documentary. Jo, who has experienced loss and having a baby after loss herself, went on to set up her own baby loss charity called Philip's Footprints. It's a local charity to me in Jersey.

Jo offered not only an emotional perspective and a sense of empathy, but also had a more informed perspective of how she set up the charity and the impact it has had.

Mary is a bereavement counsellor and so was the professional perspective for the documentary.

I wanted this documentary to bring to light the issues these women have faced and how as a society we can better ourselves and our understanding when dealing with such sensitive topics.
